READING FESTIVAL WEEKEND (sponsored by Carling)
The atmosphere
The music
The moshing
The people
The only thing that could have made my weekend more complete would be getting laid!
Truly, this was amazing. Everywhere were people chilling out to music, chatting, dancing. There were hundreds of people walking around dressed up; as Mr. T, Waldo, Wizards, Some with big hair, and one guy who was just... orange... naked and orange. Everyone was so happy and chilled; you could do things you just couldn't get away with anywhere else. I went around grabbing any randomly dressed person I could and hugged them whilst having our picture taken. If you did that in the town centre someone would probably punch your lights out!
What a line up, some of the greatest bands I have ever heard of, playing live, only a few meters in front of me, what a feeling.
Friday
What a way to start a weekend...
Dropkick Murpheys: The only thing I had ever heard form these guys was a cover of amazing grace. They were brilliant though, so many songs I had never heard, but will have to get so I can enjoy them again. There is something unique about a ska band with bagpipes, they must be appreciated.
Fightstar: Yes, the band that destroyed Busted. They were actually pretty good musically, my only problem being the boy-band vocals they had trying to head a rock band. Charlie's guitar was fine, but his voice isn't violent and bloody enough for heavy metal.
My Chemical Romance: While I enjoyed Fightstar, the main reason I sat through them, was coz 12 year olds are easy to fight through, so I could get to the front for these guys. I got about 3 people back form the railings, and boy did I have to fight to stay there. It was so worth it though, these guys rock... no, sorry: These guys ROCK!
Queens of the Stone Age: Only caught half of theses guys set coz I was watching MCR, but still... OMG they were good I only really know "no-one knows" but the rest of the set was good. When No-one Knows started, even I, yes me, danced!
The Killers: I like these guys. I will get shouted at by a fair few people for saying it, but I do like the Killers. They seemed a little quiet compared to other bands, I saw, but that could have been coz I watched casually from a distance, and didn't bother with fighting crowds of emo kids.
Pixies: Indy Rock Legends, though, they were a little disappointing. The music was good, but they juts didn't "perform" I could have listened to their best of album in the middle of a field and it would have been much the same effect.
Saturday
And this was meant to be the quiet day...
Juliette and the Licks: Okay let’s face it; I never went to see them for the music. Still, she was generally not that bad. What an arse though, in tight shiny trousers... Now she knows how to work the crowd.
Capdown: Perhaps a little close to the stage for this one, it was very violent. The music rocked and the moshing reflected this, a little too much I fear. I spent most of the pit cowering behind a lass half my height, eventually she wormed around behind me and hid herself, so it all worded out even in the end.
The Charlatans: Definitive Indy rock, I really like these guys. Again I couldn't be arsed with fighting to the front, I enjoyed and chilled out from a distance.
Razorlight: Once again, these guys are quite good and quite enjoyable, but again they were a little quiet compared to the other bands. Maybe Indy-emo stuff just isn't heavy enough for me.
Bad Religion: One of the cornerstones of modern British Punk, These guys were really, really good. I have been convinced to get more!
Foo Fighters: Need I really say more, it's the Foo Fighters. One of the biggest and IMO the best rock bands around today. Dave Grohl is the legend on stage he deserves to be. I know of no other Drummer, coz that's what he started out as, a drummer. I know of no other drummer, who is as talented a singer, as skilled a guitarist and just generally as great a showman as Dave Grohl. Halfway through the set the band disappears, leaving Dave to sing, and play solo guitar. He played chilled out renditions of brilliant Foo's song. Truly this was a show which goes down in the books as one of the greatest. The rest of the band deserve applause as well, the guitars were as ever, brilliant. In return to the past, Dave sits at the Drums for the first song of the encore, letting Taylor Hawkins take the mic and sing. Yet another show of talent from the band.
Sunday
Just when you thought it couldn't get any better...
Bullet for My Valentine: All I knew about these was a name, but the name is paired with a bloody brilliant band. Definitely one to get more music from
Alkaline Trio: I was introduced to these in quite a violent fashion by being threatened with death if I went to see them. So I did, they were pretty good. Again a little tamer than I expected and once more there was no showmanship, it was a band, playing music. Good music mind, and generally a good show.
Funeral for a Friend: could have been oh so much louder, their style of music just begs for the volume to be cranked. You cannot just watch this band; you have to be a part of it. I wish I had fought a little further forward, but I missed the start due to an urgent need for cash.
NoFX: I was as excited about seeing these guys as I was about Maiden and the Foo’s. The last album I bought was NoFX. The song I listened to before I left the house was NoFX. They did not disappoint. They addressed the audience; they got us to sing along. They badmouthed Bush, what more do you want from a band.
Iggy & the Stooges: Considering the Legend that Iggy is, I expected more of a stage presence. Still, he rocks and dances crazy. This was a good show, but could have been so much more.
Incubus: Once more, perhaps a little sedate for my taste in music, but still something enjoyable to listen to whiles eating my noodles and chilling.
Marilyn Manson: The man, The Legend, The antichrist superstar, was really kind of a let down. I was impressed, I enjoyed it, but I expected so much more from one of the most controversial rockers out there.
IRON MAIDEN: Forgetting anything negative I might have had to say up until this point. I would have happily sacrificed the entire festival up to this point, just to experience this band live. They were awesome. The music was superb, as you would expect from the greatest band EVER and the stage show matched. The first appearance of the legendary mascot was a mini-Eddie in the shape of Steve Harris's son in a mask waving a flag during the Trooper. Shortly after, our eyes are treated to an apparition of the beast itself, not Eddie, but the beast, a huge red-eyed, goat horned daemon. His head was the size of Bruce. Later Eddie comes down again, by this time I could barely cheer, I had been screaming out lyrics so hard. This latest Eddie was a huge bust. We see the brain of Eddie descend into his head, which promptly closes. Then he dances.... This enormous animatronic Eddie starts singing along. The again he appears in the encore, this time an 8ft rendition of the Maiden mascot walks onto stage, We see Jannick swinging his guitar like a samurai sword in an attempt to tame the monster. Eddie wanders to the other side of the stage and air guitars with Dave Murray... Wow
What a weekend, I'm still recovering.

So much fun
Matt, we spent an entire weekend in a field the other side of Reading from my house. After reading everything you have put in here need i say more....oh actually there is one thing...whilst you got about 3 people from the front for MCR.......Who got to the front......\m/. After comparing my other festival experiences, obviously maiden were fantastic, but 2003's headliner of Linkin Park, Blur and the gods that are metallica, still reign supreme, however when it comes to company, I had the most laughs this year. it definetly takes the cake....Same time next year dude?????September 12 2005, 16:12:58 UTC 6 years ago
